The primary defenses lie in robust building codes, functional early‑warning systems, and regular public drills—measures that are tested annually. Although the single fatality from the 5.8‑magnitude event is one too many for the affected family, it remains a small incident when compared with the more than 150 large quakes recorded over the past 118 years.
