LONDON, June 27 — Oxidative stress is a cellular-level imbalance, and a registered dietitian nutritionist has identified half a dozen routine habits that can tip the scales toward inflammation. Molly Knudsen, M.S., RDN, writing for MindBodyGreen, outlined the everyday behaviours that may be quietly accelerating cellular damage. Oxidative stress occurs when the body’s antioxidant defences are overwhelmed by free radicals — unstable molecules that can damage DNA, proteins, and cell membranes.
This is not an exotic phenomenon. It is a direct consequence of how people live their daily lives. Knudsen, who holds a master’s degree in nutrition interventions, communication, and behaviour from Texas Christian University, has catalogued six specific habits that can drive this process.
One primary culprit is a diet high in processed foods and refined sugars. These foods trigger a metabolic cascade that generates excessive free radicals, forcing the body’s antioxidant systems into overdrive. What passes for convenience in the modern diet often comes with a hidden cellular cost.
Another habit flagged by Knudsen is chronic sleep deprivation. When the body does not get adequate rest, it fails to complete its nightly repair cycles, leaving oxidative damage to accumulate. This is not merely about feeling tired. It is about a fundamental breakdown in the body’s maintenance protocols.
The list also includes excessive alcohol consumption. Alcohol metabolism produces acetaldehyde and other reactive oxygen species that directly increase oxidative stress. The dose makes the poison, but regular intake above moderate levels appears to be a consistent driver of inflammation.
Knudsen also points to a sedentary lifestyle as a significant contributor. Moderate exercise reduces oxidative stress through improved antioxidant enzyme activity. Prolonged inactivity has the opposite effect, promoting a pro-inflammatory state. The human body is designed for movement, and its absence creates a biochemical imbalance.
Chronic psychological stress is another factor. The stress hormone cortisol, when persistently elevated, can increase free radical production and suppress antioxidant defences. This is the mechanism by which a demanding job or ongoing anxiety can manifest as physical inflammation.
Finally, Knudsen highlights exposure to environmental toxins — from air pollution to household chemicals — as an unavoidable source of oxidative load. The body’s detoxification pathways, primarily in the liver, must process these compounds, and that metabolic work generates free radicals as a byproduct. A growing body of research links these cumulative oxidative insults to chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and neurodegenerative conditions.
The takeaway is that inflammation is not merely a symptom to be treated but a signal that something in the daily routine needs recalibration.
