BRASÍLIA, July 29 — Hundreds of previously unknown structures have been uncovered beneath the Amazon rainforest, according to an announcement that is redrawing the map of pre-Columbian civilization in the basin. The findings, derived from lidar surveys covering tens of thousands of square kilometers, add a substantial number of earthworks to a growing catalog that already includes over 450 geoglyphs in Brazil’s Acre state and more than 80 settlement sites in the Upper Xingu region.

The newly detected structures include ditches, platforms, and roads, with some covering areas of several hectares. No exact count has been provided; the announcement refers only to “hundreds.” The Amazon basin itself spans approximately 7 million square kilometers, with Brazil holding about 60 percent of that territory.

The chronological range of the structures has not yet been given, but similar Amazonian earthworks have been dated from 1000 BC to AD 1600. Strategically, the scale of these discoveries suggests that future population density estimates for the pre-Columbian Amazon may be revised upward by at least 20 to 30 percent.

Shifting Population Estimates

Early estimates for the pre-Columbian population of the Amazon ranged between 1 million and 2 million people. More recent research has pushed that figure to between 6 million and 8 million, and some researchers suggest it could have been as high as 10 million. The density of structures in the surveyed areas signals that the population may have been concentrated in certain regions rather than spread evenly across the basin.

For comparison, the modern Amazon region has a population density of about 4.5 people per square kilometer, based on 2020 estimates. Pre-Columbian densities in settled areas, however, could have been between 10 and 20 people per square kilometer.

That calculus shifts the broader stakes: if population was both sizable and clustered, it implies a degree of social organization and land management that challenges longstanding views of the forest as largely untouched before European contact. The lidar survey effort likely required tens of thousands of square kilometers of scanning. The cost of such operations can exceed $10 million, reflecting the technical and logistical difficulty of penetrating dense canopy to map ancient landscapes.

What this signals is a growing recognition that the Amazon was not a sparsely populated wilderness but a managed landscape shaped by sophisticated societies. As researchers continue to analyze the data, the broader stakes involve not just rewriting history but also informing present-day conservation and land-use decisions.
