WASHINGTON, June 9 — The crew of NASA’s Artemis II mission has set a new benchmark for human spaceflight, traveling farther from Earth than any previous astronauts. The milestone occurred when the Orion spacecraft reached a maximum distance of approximately 406,778 kilometers from Earth, surpassing the 400,171-kilometer record established by the Apollo 13 mission in 1970.

NASA confirmed that Orion has now begun its return journey after achieving this peak distance. This accomplishment represents a key step in NASA’s broader strategy to extend human exploration beyond low Earth orbit and deeper into the solar system. The approximately 10-day Artemis II mission is circling the Moon without a landing, serving as a critical test flight for the Orion spacecraft’s systems in deep space.

The four-person crew has been evaluating navigation, communications, and the heat shield that will protect them during reentry into Earth’s atmosphere. Data gathered from these tests will directly inform planning for subsequent missions, including a planned crewed lunar landing.

NASA officials characterized the new distance record as a symbolic marker, underscoring that human exploration is once again expanding beyond the limits reached during the Apollo era more than five decades ago. During the mission, the crew also captured imagery of a total lunar eclipse observed from the far side of the Moon. This perspective on the phenomenon has never before been recorded from a crewed spacecraft, and scientists expect the images to yield fresh insights into the Moon’s behavior during an eclipse.

The Artemis II mission is the latest in a series of flights designed to validate the performance of Orion in the harsh environment of deep space.
