Heavy rainstorms that began on 29 April have unleashed one of Brazil’s most catastrophic floods in more than eight decades, sweeping through the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul and spilling over into several Uruguayan cities. By 7 July 2024, the disaster had claimed 181 lives, triggered landslides and caused the failure of a dam, leaving a trail of destruction across the region. The brunt of the damage is concentrated in Rio Grande do Sul, where torrential downpours have overwhelmed rivers and reservoirs.
