China’s space program launched its latest lunar endeavor on May 3, 2024, when a Long March rocket lifted off from the Wenchang Space Launch Site carrying the Chang’e 6 spacecraft. The mission aims to collect rock and soil samples from the far side of the Moon and return them to Earth, a journey expected to take approximately two months. This mission represents a significant step for the China National Space Administration (CNSA), which was established in 1993 and is headquartered in Haidian, Beijing, operating under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
CNSA has built a record of steady progress in space exploration, and Chang’e 6 builds directly on two previous achievements. In 2019, China landed Chang’e 4 on the far side of the Moon, a first for any space agency.
In 2020, Chang’e 5 successfully retrieved samples from the Moon’s near side. Chang’e 6 combines both capabilities—landing on the far side and returning samples—making it a logical next step rather than a leap forward. The far side of the Moon remains largely unexplored and is geologically distinct from the near side.
Its crust is thicker, and it has fewer maria, the dark volcanic plains that cover much of the near side. Scientists hope that samples from this region could reveal differences in the Moon’s composition and history, helping to explain how the two sides formed and why they are so different.
Communication presents a unique challenge for this mission. Because the far side never faces Earth, a relay satellite is necessary to transmit signals. China launched Queqiao-2 in March 2024 specifically to support Chang’e 6.
The satellite orbits beyond the Moon, maintaining a line of sight to both the lander and ground stations on Earth, making the mission possible. The spacecraft must complete several complex steps: enter lunar orbit, descend to the surface, collect samples, launch back into orbit, rendezvous with the return vehicle, and fly home.
While each step has been accomplished individually on previous missions, this is the first time they will be combined on the far side. Success would make China the first country to retrieve samples from the far side of the Moon. Failure would represent a setback but not a fatal one, as CNSA has other missions in development, including Chang’e 7 and Chang’e 8, as well as plans for a crewed lunar landing. The launch itself was routine by CNSA standards, with the Wenchang site on Hainan Island having hosted multiple lunar missions.
The Long March rocket family serves as the workhorse of China’s space efforts. For now, the spacecraft is in transit, and the two-month clock is ticking as scientists wait for the far side to yield its secrets.
