CAPE CANAVERAL, July 7 — The numbers are staggering, and they are only going to grow. Between January and June of last year, SpaceX pulled 260 of its Starlink satellites out of orbit, sending them to burn up in the atmosphere. Each one of those satellites weighs 2,700 pounds — roughly the heft of a small car.
The total mass that re-entered over those six months: 702,000 pounds, or 318,000 kilograms. To put that in terms we can all picture, that is the equivalent of about 175 average-sized cars being incinerated in the sky.
The deorbiting rate has jumped sharply. In 2024, the company was pulling down roughly 20 satellites per month. By the first half of 2025, that pace had more than doubled to 43 satellites per month.
A constellation built for replacement
The oldest of those deorbited satellites dated back to 2019, the early days of the Starlink project. SpaceX now operates a constellation of about 6,000 satellites in low Earth orbit. The total mass of that fleet is enormous — roughly 16.2 million pounds, or 7.35 million kilograms.
And the company has made clear it does not intend to let those satellites age in orbit. SpaceX plans to replace the entire constellation every five years.
That means in a peak year, the company could be deorbiting up to 3,200 satellites. Each one burning up on re-entry. Each one adding to the total mass of vaporized metal and composite materials deposited in the upper atmosphere.
What goes up must come down
For the engineers at SpaceX, this is simply good housekeeping. Satellites have a finite lifespan. Their propulsion systems degrade.
Their electronics age. Rather than leave dead spacecraft drifting in orbit — where they become collision hazards — the company brings them down in a controlled burn.
The satellites are designed to disintegrate completely during re-entry, leaving no debris on the ground. But the scale of this operation is something new. No other company or government has ever operated a constellation this large, or planned to replace it this quickly.
The 260 satellites deorbited in the first half of 2025 represent a mass of hardware that was launched, operated for a few years, and then deliberately destroyed in the atmosphere.
The bigger picture
These figures highlight the scale of potential atmospheric impact as satellite constellations expand. Each re-entry deposits particles of aluminum, copper, and other metals into the upper atmosphere. Scientists are still studying what effect this might have on the ozone layer, on cloud formation, and on the chemistry of the mesosphere.
SpaceX is not the only player. Other companies have announced plans for their own large constellations.
If every operator follows the same replacement cycle — five years, full turnover — the total mass of satellites burning up in the atmosphere each year could reach tens of millions of pounds. For now, the company continues to launch new satellites at a rapid pace, even as it deorbits older ones. The constellation of 6,000 is not static; it is a flowing river of hardware, with new spacecraft entering service as old ones are removed.
The 260 satellites that came down in early 2025 are just the beginning. If the five-year replacement plan holds, that number will only climb.
