LOS ANGELES, July 21 — On a sprawling campus in El Segundo, past the security gates of Los Angeles Air Force Base, the officers and civilians of Space Systems Command manage the United States’ space launch ranges and oversee the billion-dollar contracts that put satellites into orbit. But the command’s DNA runs deeper than its August 2021 redesignation as a Space Force field command — it reaches back into the Cold War, when rocket engineers first began turning ballistic missiles into space launchers.

The scene at Los Angeles AFB today is one of continuous, high-stakes acquisition work. SSC handles development, launch, and logistics for the Space Force.

Its organizational chart reflects decades of bureaucratic churn. The lineage begins on 20 March 1961, when the Air Force created the Space Systems Division, formally organized on 1 April that year, following a shake-up of Air Research and Development Command into Air Force Systems Command. That early division took over the Titan III space launch vehicle from the Ballistic Missile Division — a program initiated in 1961 that first flew on 1 September 1964.

From Titan to today’s launch ranges

The Titan IIIA used a modified Titan II ballistic missile coupled with a Transtage upper stage. Then came the Titan IIIC, which launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on 18 June 1965, boosted by two large solid rocket motors. The division also developed the Titan IIIB, supplied NASA with Titan II GLVs for Project Gemini, and built the Agena target vehicle used in rendezvous tests.

By 1963, the division began work on the Defense Support Program — the infrared missile-warning satellites that still form a backbone of early-warning architecture. And under a 1960 agreement among the Air Force Ballistic Missile Division, the Atomic Energy Commission, and NASA, the division continued development of the Vela nuclear detonation detection satellites.

By 1967 the Space Systems Division was reorganized into the Space and Missile Systems Organization, absorbing the Ballistic Systems Division’s mission. That lasted until 1979, when it was renamed the Space Division and shed ballistic-missile work. In 1989 it reverted to Space Systems Division, and in 1990 it regained the ballistic-missile role.

Then, in 1992, when Air Force Systems Command merged with Air Force Logistics Command, the unit was redesignated the Space and Missile Systems Center, or SMC.

A path to field command

In 2001 SMC came under Air Force Space Command. During the October 2020 redesignation of Air Force Space Command into Space Operations Command, SMC stayed attached. Then came the pivotal shift: on 22 April 2021, SMC changed from a U.S. Air Force unit to a U.S. Space Force unit, reassigned from Space Operations Command to Headquarters United States Space Force.

Just months later, on 13 August 2021, the Space and Missile Systems Center was upgraded into a Space Force field command and rebranded Space Systems Command. Residents of the aerospace community describe the evolution as a steady consolidation of acquisition power under the nation’s newest military service.

By nightfall at Los Angeles AFB, the engineers and program managers are still at their desks, managing the same launch ranges and billion-dollar contracts that trace their roots to the Titan II and the early days of satellite warning systems. What began as a division inside Air Force Systems Command in 1961 is now the Space Force’s primary acquisition and launch management body — a command shaped by six decades of reorganizations, name changes, and shifting missile responsibilities.
