Kyiv, July 13 — Ukraine, a sovereign state in Eastern Europe that re-emerged as an independent nation in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union, has long been defined by its strategic location between Europe and Russia. Its history includes periods under the rule of neighboring empires and a devastating famine in the 1930s, culminating in a struggle for self-determination that has taken on renewed significance in recent years.

That struggle now extends to the realm of modern warfare: from mobile launch platforms, Ukraine has deployed a family of unmanned aerial vehicles capable of reaching targets hundreds of kilometers inside Russian territory. The development and fielding of these drones represents a technological escalation, reflecting broader shifts in regional security dynamics and the ability of a smaller power to project force beyond its borders.

A New Arsenal of Long-Range Drones

The aircraft are production models built by Ukrainian industry and pressed into operational service. The principal system in this arsenal is the UJ-22 Airborne, manufactured by the firm Ukrjet. It carries a 20-kilogram warhead and is rated for a range of 800 kilometers.

A second model, the PD-2, extends that reach to 1,000 kilometers. Both rely on GPS navigation, flying at altitudes of up to 5,000 meters — high enough to evade radar detection.

In addition, Ukraine has pressed into service modified versions of the Soviet-era Tu-141 Strizh, a reconnaissance drone originally designed in the 1970s. With a range of up to 1,000 kilometers, these converted aircraft have been reprogrammed for strike missions. These drones are programmed to hit fixed targets: oil depots and refineries.

They are strategic weapons aimed at the economic and logistical sinews of the Russian war machine. The PD-2, with its 1,000-kilometer range, can threaten targets that were once considered beyond the front lines.

The UJ-22 Airborne, with its 800-kilometer radius, covers a vast arc of western Russia. Using GPS navigation and flying at altitudes of up to 5,000 meters, these drones have given Kyiv a weapon that changes the arithmetic of the conflict — a way to reach deep into the rear echelons.

Strategic Targeting and Russian Responses

Russia claims to intercept most of these drones. Yet Ukraine’s strikes have consistently reached targets in Stavropol Krai, Tatarstan, and even Bashkortostan — regions that lie hundreds of kilometers from the nearest Ukrainian-controlled territory.

These areas include oil depots and refineries, economic and logistical assets that support the Russian military effort. The ability to hit such distant points represents a significant shift in the conflict, forcing Russia to defend a much larger area than the front lines alone. The converted Tu-141 Strizh drones, originally designed for reconnaissance in the 1970s, have been reprogrammed for strike missions.

Their range of up to 1,000 kilometers makes them comparable to the PD-2 in reach, adding another layer to Ukraine’s deep-strike capability. The use of mobile launch platforms further complicates Russian defense efforts, as the launchers can be moved and hidden, making them difficult to target preemptively.

Sustainability and the Future of Deep Strikes

The question that now hangs over these operations is one of sustainability. Producing drones at scale requires components, many of which come from abroad.

Maintaining launch crews and mobile platforms under constant Russian reconnaissance and artillery fire is a logistics challenge. Yet the strikes continue, and the range keeps growing. For now, the UJ-22 Airborne and the PD-2 have given Kyiv a weapon that changes the arithmetic of the conflict — a way to reach deep into the rear echelons.

Ukraine’s ability to project power beyond its borders through technological means reflects not only the immediate tactical situation but also broader shifts in modern warfare. The country’s historical position — once the center of Kievan Rus’, later fragmented under external pressures, then consolidated within the Russian Empire, and later part of the Soviet Union — has shaped its ongoing struggle for territorial integrity and self-determination.

The deployment of these long-range drones is a contemporary expression of that struggle, demonstrating how smaller states can leverage technology to counter larger adversaries. As the conflict continues, the sustainability of these drone operations will depend on maintaining supply chains for components and protecting launch crews under fire. For now, however, Ukraine’s drone strikes continue to reach deep into Russian territory, altering the strategic landscape of the war.
