The Japan Meteorological Agency logged a peak intensity of Shindo 7, while the Modified Mercalli scale rated the tremor at X–XI, indicating extreme, violent shaking capable of tearing foundations from the ground.
The catastrophe claimed at least 732 lives, with two people still missing. Ishikawa Prefecture bore the brunt of the fatalities, accounting for 718 deaths; eight more perished in Toyama and six in Niigata. Over 1,400 individuals suffered injuries, and damage assessments recorded 204,903 structures harmed across nine prefectures.
These figures make the event the deadliest earthquake in Japan since the 2016 Kumamoto quake, which killed more than 270 people. The Noto disaster has more than doubled that death toll, marking a grim new milestone in the nation’s recent seismic history.
