LISBON, Portugal — The seafloor shook. Ships felt it. But for the people living along the Atlantic coasts of Europe and Africa, Monday evening passed like any other.
A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 21:16 UTC, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The epicenter sat far from any continent, buried under deep ocean.
No tsunami warning was issued. No coastal evacuations were ordered. No damage was reported anywhere on land.
That is the typical story of a Mid-Atlantic Ridge quake. This one was no exception.
The ridge is a divergent plate boundary — the North American and Eurasian plates pulling apart, the South American and African plates doing the same. Magma rises. Crust cracks.
Earthquakes are routine. The USGS records show at least 58 quakes of magnitude 5.0 or greater within roughly 300 kilometers of this epicenter over the past two decades. The largest among them was stronger than Monday’s event.
This quake was shallow — 10 kilometers deep. That matters.
Shallow quakes, anything less than 70 kilometers down, transfer more energy straight up to the seafloor. A deeper quake of the same magnitude would dissipate more energy before reaching the surface. This one did not have far to travel.
The shaking was sharper as a result. But sharp shaking at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean is not the same as sharp shaking under Lisbon or Lagos or Luanda.
The practical upshot for nearly everyone was minimal. The people who likely felt it were on research vessels and passing ships. Maybe a crew member on watch noticed a shudder.
Maybe instruments on a drifting buoy registered the motion. The seafloor itself absorbed the energy. That was it.
For coastal residents, the relevant question is always tsunami risk. A shallow quake on a plate boundary can displace water.
That did not happen here. The USGS confirmed no tsunami warning was issued. The event was too small, too far, and too typical to pose that kind of threat.
Magnitude 5 earthquakes are classified as moderate. Near an epicenter on land, they can knock items off shelves and crack plaster.
They can rattle nerves. But this epicenter was not on land. It was under thousands of meters of saltwater, hundreds of kilometers from the nearest populated island.
Portugal sits on the eastern edge of the Atlantic. The Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal, lie closer to the ridge. But even there, the quake was not felt.
The distance was too great. The energy dissipated across the ocean basin.
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is one of the most seismically restless places on Earth. That is not alarmist — it is geologic fact. The constant stretching and cracking produce a steady drumbeat of small to moderate quakes.
Most go unnoticed by anyone not looking at a seismograph. Monday’s quake was one of those.
For the USGS, it was a data point. For the global earthquake catalog, it was a routine entry. For the people of Portugal, West Africa, South America, and the Caribbean, it was nothing at all.
The ridge kept spreading. The magma kept rising. The plates kept pulling apart.
