San Francisco is about to become the test kitchen for a strange bet: that people will pay for a spa day that includes a full-body medical scan. Midjourney, the company known for turning text prompts into images, plans to open its first Midjourney Spa here in 2027. The spa will offer saunas, jacuzzis, cold plunge pools, and rooms bathed in “golden light.” Inside those rooms, guests will stand on a platform and be lowered into water.

A ring of hundreds of thousands of ultrasound sensors will map their internal tissues in about 60 seconds. The technology is called the Midjourney Scanner.

It uses ultrasound tomography — sound waves, not radiation or magnetic fields. The company claims it can produce images comparable to an MRI, but tens of times faster and cheaper. If that claim holds, it changes the economics of diagnostics.

An MRI costs hundreds to thousands of dollars and takes thirty minutes or more. The Midjourney Scanner, the company says, could be so cheap and fast that people might use it every day.

That is the core of the project. Regular data collection. The company’s management says the technology already exists and is being tested.

The practical upshot, as they put it, is that people could regularly collect data about their bodies. Not when something hurts. Not when a doctor orders it.

Every day, as part of a routine visit to a spa. The strategy flips the usual logic of medical imaging.

The spa network itself is a workaround. If you cannot sell a scanner to hospitals, sell the scan to consumers.

The company is betting that early adopters will pay for a body map the way they pay for a Peloton subscription or a continuous glucose monitor. There are obvious questions. What happens when a daily scan finds something?

Who interprets the data? A radiologist reading 100 scans a day is one thing.

The company’s management is confident. They say the technology is tested.

They say the scan takes a minute. They say the first spa opens in three years. That timeline is aggressive.

But the direction is clear: turn medical diagnostics into a consumer product. Make it pleasant.

Make it cheap. Make it daily. Whether the scanner works as advertised is the open question.

Whether people will pay for a scan they did not ask for is another. But the bet is being placed now, in San Francisco, with ultrasound sensors and warm water and a room full of golden light.
