Starting Tuesday, three Boeing E‑3 Sentry airborne warning and control system (AWACS) planes touched down at Otopeni airbase near Bucharest. The move fills the final gap in a NATO‑wide radar net that has been assembled over the past year.
Since the Cold War, the E‑3’s 30‑foot rotating radar domes have been a familiar sight in NATO’s air‑defence arsenal. Although the airframes date back to the 1970s, their onboard electronics have received continual upgrades, allowing the aircraft to provide a live, 360‑degree picture of aircraft activity within a 300‑kilometre radius. NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu noted that the platforms can spot aircraft hundreds of kilometres away. The deployment follows a shift in NATO’s security calculations after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The alliance’s eastern frontier is now a 650‑kilometre stretch of Romanian land bordering Ukraine, plus a maritime boundary that abuts Russian‑occupied territory. Ground forces from the United States, France, Belgium and Canada are already stationed in Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia, but they require comprehensive air‑situational awareness to operate safely.
Prior to the arrival of the AWACS, aerial monitoring in the region relied on a patchwork of assets: U.S. MQ‑9 Reaper drones operating from Câmpia Turzii, British and Italian fighter patrols conducting enhanced air‑policing, and other national radars. Each of these provides a limited field of view—drones see a narrow strip, fighter pilots see only what is directly ahead. By contrast, an AWACS aircraft can simultaneously track movements from the Danube Delta to the Crimean Peninsula, offering a “flying command post” that links all NATO air operations in the sector.
According to NATO, the aircraft will remain in Romanian airspace for “several weeks,” a period that is intentionally vague but typical for such missions. The planes are being rotated from their home base at Geilenkirchen, Germany, to Otopeni, where they will operate without crossing into Ukrainian or Russian airspace.
While the legal distinction is important, the radar’s line‑of‑sight does not require the aircraft to leave Romanian airspace to observe the Black Sea corridor or the route from mainland Russia to Crimea. Romania’s geography makes it a natural hub for the enhanced surveillance architecture. The country’s extensive Black Sea coastline, its border with Ukraine, and proximity to the Danube Delta and the approaches to Odesa create a strategic triangle that benefits from layered intelligence assets.
The addition of AWACS capacity builds on existing Romanian‑hosted intelligence platforms, creating a denser, more resilient monitoring network. The broader implication of the deployment is the establishment of a continuous early‑warning envelope that stretches from the Baltic to the Black Sea, eliminating blind spots along NATO’s eastern edge.
Should a Russian Su‑35 launch from an airfield in occupied Crimea, a German‑built E‑3 stationed over Romania would detect the aircraft before it becomes airborne. While the current rotation is temporary, NATO’s intention is to maintain a permanent posture in the region. The ground battlegroups, drone operations, and now the AWACS rotations are expected to persist, signaling that the alliance views the eastern flank as an active, not a quiet, theatre.
In essence, the arrival of the three AWACS planes equips NATO with the ability to view the entire operational board at once, ensuring that every movement across the eastern front is observed and assessed in real time.
