He states that the satellites are designed to be fully demisable upon reentry, meaning they burn up completely in the atmosphere rather than leaving debris. He has also argued that the atmospheric impact of the constellation is negligible compared to other human activities. These claims have not silenced critics, who point to the sheer number of satellites and their effect on astronomical observations.

His leadership style and controversial statements on social media have made him a polarizing figure in the space industry. Supporters see a visionary willing to break regulatory norms to accelerate progress.

Critics see a billionaire whose companies receive billions in government contracts while he attacks the very agencies that oversee them.

Regulatory friction

Musk has criticized regulatory hurdles, including National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) reviews, as obstacles to innovation. NEPA requires federal agencies to assess the environmental impact of major projects before they proceed. For a company launching rockets and satellites at an unprecedented pace, these reviews can slow operations.

Musk has framed them as bureaucratic drag on American competitiveness. The tension between rapid private-sector innovation and public oversight is unlikely to resolve soon.

As Starlink expands and SpaceX pushes toward Mars, the regulatory questions will only grow. For now, Musk continues to bet that speed and scale will overcome both technical and political barriers. The encouraging part for investors and space enthusiasts is that the rockets keep flying.
