GENEVA, July 14 — The shift is so fundamental we barely notice it anymore. But decades after a British scientist at CERN first sketched out a proposal for managing information, the World Wide Web has completely rewired how humanity communicates, shops, learns, and connects. What started as a tool for particle physicists has become the backbone of modern life.
Tim Berners-Lee was working at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory, when he submitted his initial proposal in March 1989. He wasn’t trying to build a global commercial platform.
He was solving a practical problem: how to share data between scientists across different computer systems. The solution he developed was elegantly simple. He created HTML, the language web pages are written in; HTTP, the protocol for transferring that data; and the first web browser and editor, simply called WorldWideWeb, in 1990.
The first website went live on info.cern.ch on August 6, 1991. It was a plain page explaining what the World Wide Web was and how to set up a server.
No images. No video. Just text and hyperlinks.
The trend underneath was already there, though — the ability to jump from one document to another with a single click was revolutionary. What happened next changed the pace of adoption. CERN made a crucial decision on April 30, 1993, releasing the web code into the public domain.
That meant anyone could use it, modify it, build on it, without paying a license fee. Watch this space — that single act of openness is why the web grew the way it did.
The Mosaic browser arrived in 1993, built by Marc Andreessen at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). This was the moment the web became graphical and user-friendly. Instead of a text-only interface, users could see images embedded in pages, click buttons, and navigate visually.
It made the web accessible to non-technical people. The numbers tell the story of the explosion.
By 1994, there were 3,000 websites on the internet. Five years later, by 1999, that number had jumped to 3 million. The growth wasn’t linear — it was exponential, driven by the combination of free, open technology and increasingly user-friendly browsers.
Berners-Lee didn’t stop after inventing the web. He founded the World Wide Web Consortium, known as the W3C, in 1994. The consortium sets the technical standards that keep the web interoperable — ensuring that a website built in one country works in a browser on the other side of the world.
The W3C remains the central body for web standards today. The scale of what’s been built on those foundations is staggering.
E-commerce, social media, streaming video, cloud computing, online education, telemedicine — all of it rests on the protocols Berners-Lee wrote in the early 1990s. The web has become an infrastructure as essential as electricity or running water for billions of people. What’s changing now is the next layer.
Artificial intelligence is being woven into web experiences in real time. Search engines are becoming conversational.
Content is being generated by algorithms as well as humans. The underlying architecture of HTML, HTTP, and URLs remains, but how people interact with it is shifting rapidly. The original vision was about connecting documents.
The current reality is about connecting intelligence. Watch this space — the next phase of the web will look very different from the one we’ve known, even as it runs on the same foundational code that Berners-Lee released into the public domain more than three decades ago.
