CAPE CANAVERAL, July 13 — Against this backdrop of renewed transatlantic cooperation in space exploration, the towering figure of Wernher von Braun remains a subject of profound fascination and moral complexity. The man who built the rocket that carried men to the Moon also built the weapons that rained down on London and Antwerp. It is a duality that Europe, perhaps more than America, has never quite set aside.

Von Braun was born Wernher Magnus Maximilian Freiherr von Braun on March 23, 1912, into an aristocratic German family. From the corridors of the Weimar Republic to the proving grounds of Peenemünde, his trajectory was defined by a single, relentless obsession: rocket technology.

During the Second World War, he became the leading figure in the development of the V-2 rocket for Nazi Germany, a weapon of terror that killed thousands of civilians. What is at stake in any honest reckoning with his legacy is the uncomfortable truth that the Cold War’s greatest engineering triumph was built on the backs of a wartime arsenal.

From Peenemünde to the Redstone Arsenal

After the war, von Braun and roughly 1,600 other German scientists were brought to the United States under Operation Paperclip. The wider picture here is one of strategic necessity: Washington wanted his brain before Moscow could claim it. He worked for the U.S. Army on ballistic missiles before joining NASA in 1960.

That same year, he became the director of the Marshall Space Flight Center, a post he would hold for a decade. It was at Marshall that von Braun became the chief architect of the Saturn V launch vehicle, the enormous rocket that enabled the Apollo Moon landings.

He also helped develop the Saturn I and Saturn IB rockets, the stepping stones to that lunar achievement. For a generation of Europeans watching grainy television broadcasts, the sight of a Saturn V lifting off from Cape Kennedy was proof that the old world’s science had, in a strange and troubling way, helped the new world reach the heavens.

After Apollo and the Final Years

Following the Apollo programme, von Braun became NASA’s Deputy Associate Administrator for Planning in 1970. He left the agency in 1972 to work for Fairchild Industries, a move that took him from the public sector into the private aerospace industry. In 1975, he received the National Medal of Science, the highest scientific honour in the United States.

He died on June 16, 1977, in Alexandria, Virginia, of pancreatic cancer. For the European observer, the story of von Braun is not simply one of a brilliant engineer who switched sides.

It is a story about how the post-war order was built, about the bargains struck in the name of progress, and about the rockets that rose from the ashes of a continent. As the current era pushes once more toward the Moon and beyond, the ghost of Peenemünde still walks the corridors of Cape Canaveral.
