Amazon Expands to Pakistan, Boosting International Trade Opportunities

On 25 May 2021, Amazon announced that Pakistan would join the 102 nations already eligible for the company’s seller programme. The decision enables Pakistani merchants to list their goods on the global platform and ship directly to customers abroad.

The inclusion is being hailed as a catalyst for Pakistan’s international trade. Aisha Moriani, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, described the move as “a significant development for Pakistan’s e‑commerce industry” and said officials are coordinating with Amazon to smooth the onboarding of local sellers. Industry leaders echoed the optimism. Badar Khushnood, Chairman of the Pakistan Software Houses Association, noted that Pakistan’s “high‑quality products” can now reach a worldwide audience.

Abdul Razak Dawood, the Prime Minister’s Advisor on Commerce and Investment, added that the expansion is expected to lift export volumes and foreign‑exchange earnings—key drivers of the nation’s economic growth. Products such as textiles, leather goods and handicrafts, which already enjoy strong demand overseas, will gain a new sales channel through Amazon’s marketplace.

Analysts anticipate that small and medium‑sized enterprises (SMEs) will especially benefit, gaining exposure to consumers they could not previously access. Beyond revenue, the platform is projected to generate employment in e‑commerce‑related fields, from logistics to customer service. Shabnam Baloch, President of the Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry, highlighted the opportunity for women entrepreneurs, pledging collaboration with the government and other stakeholders to help SMEs and female‑owned businesses take full advantage of the new market.

However, the expansion also brings challenges. The State Bank of Pakistan confirmed that it is working with the government and relevant parties to develop payment solutions that meet Amazon’s requirements, ensuring a seamless transaction process for Pakistani sellers.

Compliance with Amazon’s quality standards, logistics capabilities and customer‑service expectations will demand investment from businesses. The government is therefore tasked with bolstering the necessary infrastructure and regulatory framework to support the sector’s growth while safeguarding consumer interests. To translate the opportunity into tangible outcomes, coordinated efforts between public authorities and the private sector are essential.

Training programmes, financial incentives and streamlined customs procedures are among the measures being discussed to help SMEs, particularly those led by women, navigate the platform’s requirements. With the right mix of policy support, technical assistance and market readiness, Pakistan’s entry onto Amazon’s seller list could become a turning point for the country’s economy—boosting export earnings, creating jobs and enhancing the nation’s competitiveness in the global digital marketplace.
