International trade rises as commerce ministry lays out 2023 plans

For the people of Cambodia, the growth in international trade has brought about significant changes in their lives and communities. The increase in trade has led to more job opportunities, higher incomes, and improved living standards. As the country’s trade value reached $52.425 billion in 2022, it is clear that the effects of this growth are being felt by individuals and families across the kingdom.

The 9.19% year-over-year increase in foreign trade value is a testament to the country’s efforts to improve its export competitiveness and create a favorable business and investment environment. According to Pan Sorasak, the minister of commerce, the reforms implemented by the government have played a crucial role in driving this growth.

“In-depth reforms in all areas” and an “improved export competitiveness” have contributed to the significant increase in trade, he said. The minister was speaking during the annual meeting of the ministry of trade, where officials discussed the accomplishments of the Cabinet-level organization in 2022 and established goals for 2023.

Trade Performance in 2022

The trade data for 2022 shows a significant increase in both imports and exports. The kingdom’s imports and exports came to $29.942 billion and $22.483 billion, respectively, representing a 4.32% and 16.44% increase from the previous year. This resulted in a 20.60% reduction in the trade deficit to $7.459 billion, according to the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE).

The minister attributed this growth to the country’s high coronavirus vaccination rates, which allowed the government to adopt an endemic approach to Covid management and permit the full resumption of socio-economic activity in November 2021. The removal of additional restrictions that hindered trade and commerce throughout 2022 also contributed to the growth.

The minister credited bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements (FTA) as well as an increase in exports driven by market diversification and preferential trade accords upheld by various jurisdictions. The nearly double-digit trade growth seen last year is a testament to the effectiveness of these efforts.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, fuel, oil, and food crises, as well as the growing prices and the effects of the Ukraine crisis, Cambodia’s products exports and the country’s overall economy continued to develop significantly last year. The minister noted that the government’s efforts to improve the business and investment environment have helped to mitigate the impact of these challenges. The increase in trade has also created new opportunities for businesses and individuals in Cambodia, and the government is committed to continuing its efforts to support trade and economic growth.

Looking Ahead

As the ministry of trade sets its goals for 2023, it is clear that the country is poised for continued growth and development. The government’s commitment to improving the business and investment environment, combined with the country’s high vaccination rates and favorable trade agreements, is likely to drive further growth in international trade. As the people of Cambodia look to the future, they can expect to see continued improvements in their living standards and increased opportunities for economic growth and development. The next year will be crucial in determining the trajectory of Cambodia’s trade and economic growth, and it will be important to watch how the government’s efforts to support trade and commerce unfold.
