World stock markets staged a sharp turnaround on Tuesday, rallying after weeks of decline as the United States government moved closer to finalizing a financial relief package worth over $1.8 trillion. The stimulus effort, announced by President Donald Trump’s administration alongside Congress, aims to provide critical economic support during the global coronavirus pandemic.
The announcement came at a time when investors were urgently seeking ways to protect their portfolios from the virus’s rapid spread. In addition, the Federal Reserve committed to aggressive measures to stabilize financial conditions, including purchasing unlimited government debt and lending directly to businesses to maintain liquidity across the economy.
Major US Indices Post Record Gains
American financial markets reacted with relief as major stock indices recorded their strongest performance in decades. The Dow Jones Industrial Average posted its best single-day gain since 1933, climbing 11.4 percent.
This surge signaled renewed investor confidence that government intervention could prevent a total economic collapse. The S&P 500 rose 9.38 percent, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 8.12 percent. These figures marked a historic recovery from the panic selling seen in earlier trading sessions.
Gold futures also rose, closing up 6.7 percent at $1,672.60 per ounce, indicating traders were willing to accept lower interest rates and higher inflation risks in exchange for the safety net provided by the new stimulus package.
International Markets Follow US Lead
The positive momentum spread beyond American borders, lifting trading floors across Asia and Europe. China’s SSE benchmark added 2.3 percent, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 4.4 percent, Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 7 percent, and South Korea’s Kospi surged 8.6 percent.
These gains showed international investors responding favorably to the stability promised by the United States. Even European countries hardest hit by COVID-19, including Spain and Italy, saw their stock markets rise. France’s CAC 40 gained 3.9 percent, London’s FTSE 100 rose nearly 4 percent, and Germany’s DAX increased by more than 5 percent. According to American finance company MSCI, world stock markets recorded their largest single-day gain in decades, rising 8.39 percent overall.
Legislative Progress Key to Sustained Rally
Market participants are now closely monitoring the legislative process as the primary driver for future stability. Neel Shah, senior trader at Peak6 Capital Management, noted that while signs of a market bottom were emerging, the next critical step remains Senate passage of the stimulus bill. “We’re seeing some signs that a bottoming is happening…The next big step is the Senate passing the stimulus bill,” Shah stated.
This view reflects a broader consensus among financial experts that legislative certainty is needed to sustain the rally. Policymakers in several countries are also working on their own stimulus measures to revive markets facing their biggest downturn since the 2008 global financial crisis.
Federal Reserve Support Ensures Market Liquidity
The $1.8 trillion package announcement coincides with aggressive Federal Reserve efforts to calm markets. The central bank has pledged to buy as much government debt as needed while lending directly to businesses facing liquidity crises.
This dual approach ensures credit remains accessible for companies and consumers, preventing a freeze in the financial system. By combining direct fiscal stimulus with monetary support, the administration aims to create a comprehensive safety net addressing both immediate cash flow needs and long-term economic recovery. This strategy mirrors successful interventions from previous crises but is scaled to meet the unique challenges of a global pandemic. The assurance of unlimited market support has sparked positive responses worldwide, helping restore faith in the resilience of the global financial system.
