NEW YORK, January 3 — The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 500 points today, its worst single-day decline in four weeks, following the U.S. killing of Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani. The Dow closed at 28,634.88, down 1.8 percent. The S&P 500 fell 1.7 percent to 3,234.85, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.6 percent to 9,020.77.
The sell-off was triggered by a U.S. drone strike near Baghdad International Airport on January 2, an operation the Pentagon confirmed was carried out by a drone. President Donald Trump authorized the strike, stating it was to prevent an imminent attack on U.S. personnel.
The Middle East accounts for about 30 percent of global oil production, and the strike raised fears of supply disruptions. West Texas Intermediate crude rose 3.1 percent to $63.05 per barrel. Gold increased 1.6 percent to $1,552.50 per ounce as investors sought safe-haven assets.
The U.S. dollar weakened against the Japanese yen and Swiss franc. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed “severe revenge.” The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad urged all American citizens to leave Iraq immediately.
The Dow’s previous worst day was on December 3, 2019, when it fell 799 points on trade war concerns. Today’s 500-point drop reflects a military confrontation rather than economic negotiation. The Pentagon’s confirmation that a drone carried out the strike leaves no ambiguity about U.S. involvement.
President Trump’s framing of the operation as a defensive measure to prevent an imminent attack on U.S. personnel will be tested in the days ahead as Iran’s response — and the market’s reaction — unfolds. Oil prices will be a key indicator: any disruption to Middle Eastern supply routes could send crude higher. The safe-haven flows into gold and the yen suggest that investors are bracing for further volatility.
On the geopolitical front, all eyes are on Tehran. Khamenei’s promise of “severe revenge” leaves the timing and nature of any Iranian retaliation uncertain.
The U.S. administration has signaled it is prepared for further action if American personnel are threatened.
