MENLO PARK — When Meta reported its fourth-quarter earnings in January 2025, the numbers told a story of a company whose advertising engine is humming on artificial intelligence. Revenue hit $48.4 billion, topping analyst forecasts of $47.1 billion. Net income rose to $16.5 billion, a 35 percent jump from the same period the year before.

But the real headline for the business world sits inside those figures: ad revenue accounted for $46.7 billion of that total, or 97 percent of everything the company brought in. That dominance is not an accident.

Meta has been retooling its advertising machinery around machine learning, and the results are showing up in the bottom line.

AI at the controls

The company credited its growth to AI-powered ad targeting and measurement tools. Two products in particular are driving the shift: Advantage+ shopping campaigns and automated ad creative optimization. Advantage+ uses machine learning to automatically find the right audiences and place ads where they will perform best, removing much of the manual guesswork that has long defined digital advertising.

For advertisers, the payoff has been tangible. Meta reported that those using Advantage+ saw an average 32 percent increase in return on ad spend.

That kind of efficiency gain matters in an industry where every percentage point of performance can shift millions in budget allocation. The broader ad market is responding. Meta’s total ad impression volume grew 12 percent year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2024, while the average price per ad increased 8 percent.

Both metrics rising together suggests strong demand — advertisers are buying more space and paying more for it. For the full year 2024, Meta’s ad revenue reached $167.5 billion, up 22 percent from 2023.

More time, better targeting

Behind the ad numbers is a deeper shift in how people use Meta’s apps. The company’s family of apps — Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger — had 3.35 billion daily active users in December 2024. That is a massive audience, and AI is helping Meta keep them engaged.

Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said AI-driven recommendations increased time spent on Facebook by 8 percent and on Instagram by 6 percent in 2024. More time on the platform means more opportunities for ad placements, and better data for the machine-learning models that power Advantage+ campaigns.

The company has signaled that its investments in artificial intelligence will continue to sharpen ad targeting. For businesses large and small, that means the algorithms deciding which users see which ads are only going to get more precise. What to watch next: As Meta pours resources into AI infrastructure, the question for advertisers and investors alike is whether the 32 percent boost in return on ad spend can hold — or improve — as competition for user attention intensifies across the social media landscape.
