KARACHI, July 16 — A fresh examination of aviation safety data is drawing attention to the risks posed by aging aircraft, particularly older Boeing models, when they are operated in regions with weak regulatory oversight. The Boeing 727, a model that first entered service in the 1960s, has a hull-loss accident rate of 1.67 per million flights, according to the Aviation Safety Network. The 737, including its older variants, has a rate of 0.62 per million flights.

Transponders, which allow aircraft to be identified by air traffic control and other planes, were either turned off or malfunctioning.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires all U.S.-registered aircraft to meet safety standards. However, many aging planes are re-registered in countries with weaker enforcement, such as Sudan, Equatorial Guinea, or the Comoros. This practice effectively moves the aircraft outside the FAA’s direct oversight, even as they continue to fly in challenging environments.
The absence of reliable tracking creates safety risks for civilians on the ground and for other aircraft operating in the same airspace. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has called for stricter global tracking requirements, but implementation remains uneven across different countries and regions.
