Gardenia Bakeries (KL) Sendirian Berhad has released an official statement to address a video that has been widely shared on social media, portraying alleged tampering of bakery products during delivery. The company clarified that the footage does not involve its Malaysian operations.

According to Gardenia, the clip originates from an incident that took place at its Philippine subsidiary and was already resolved months before it resurfaced online. The Malaysian arm stressed that it operates under a distinct management structure and set of operational procedures from Gardenia Philippines. By highlighting this organisational separation, Gardenia Malaysia aims to prevent the conflation of a local issue in the Philippines with its own brand reputation in Malaysia. The video first appeared on a Facebook page in September of the previous year, targeting the Philippine market.

Before its removal, the post accumulated more than 45,000 shares, sparking considerable public concern about food‑safety standards. Gardenia Philippines promptly launched an internal investigation to address the allegations and mitigate any damage to its regional image.

Findings from the Philippine investigation revealed that the delivery staff featured in the clip was handling loaves slated for disposal rather than fresh inventory intended for customers. Gardenia’s policy requires unsold bread to be withdrawn from stores and replaced with new stock daily, a practice common across the industry to preserve product freshness. The statement from Gardenia Philippines noted that the employee removed slices from the discarded loaves for personal consumption, a breach of company rules despite the bread not being part of sell‑able stock.

Following the discovery, the employee underwent the company’s administrative due‑process, resulting in disciplinary action in line with internal guidelines. Gardenia Philippines used the episode to reinforce the importance of strict adherence to handling procedures, even for goods that are no longer for sale.

Gardenia Malaysia, in its response, reiterated its commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. The company emphasized ongoing investments in staff training, particularly concerning proper product handling during delivery and storage, to safeguard product integrity and maintain consumer trust. In addition to the clarification, Gardenia Malaysia urged the public to rely on official communications rather than circulating unverified viral content.

The firm asked Malaysians to share the company’s statement to ensure accurate information reaches consumers and to help curb the spread of misinformation. The Malaysian subsidiary also opened channels for feedback, inviting stakeholders and customers to direct any questions or comments to [email protected].

By keeping these lines of communication open, Gardenia demonstrates a willingness to engage transparently with its audience. This episode underscores the challenges businesses face in the digital age, where false or outdated material can quickly affect brand perception. Gardenia’s proactive clarification serves as an example of how a company can address misinformation while reaffirming its core standards and operational practices.
