For many Malaysians, a daily trip to their favorite coffee shop or restaurant is a staple of their routine. As the consumer sector in Malaysia continues to grow, it’s not just businesses that are benefiting – individuals and communities are also feeling the impact. With strong domestic demand and supply chain enhancements, restocking operations are becoming easier, making it more convenient for people to access their favorite products.
This, in turn, is supporting local economies and helping to create jobs. The growth of the consumer sector is also being driven by commodity prices heading downward, following price increases made in 2021 to 2022, and margin stabilization.
According to Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research, businesses that can adapt to changing consumer needs and offer customers greater ease will be more successful in capturing the ringgit spent. For example, Berjaya Food Bhd, which has a “buy” call and a target price of RM1.31 per share, is expected to benefit from the expansion of Starbucks and the increasing sales from ongoing promotions and a leaner concept adopted by Kenny Rogers Roasters restaurants.
Challenges Ahead
However, the outlook for the consumer sector is not without difficulties. Declining actual earnings and income due to inflation, the normalization of retaliatory spending, recessionary concerns, and falling consumer mood are all potential challenges that businesses will need to navigate. Despite these challenges, HLIB Research remains neutral on the sector, citing the potential for businesses to change course and adapt to changing consumer needs.
One area of growth is the food and beverage (F&B) sector, with companies such as Focus Point Holdings Bhd, which has a “buy” call and a target price of RM1.51 per share, expected to benefit from the growth of the optical and F&B areas. The company’s management is concentrating on growing these two pillars of growth, with new corporate F&B clients expected to come on-stream in early FY23, which could boost the group’s earnings significantly.
Expansion and Innovation
Other companies, such as 7-Eleven Malaysia Holdings Bhd, QL Resources Bhd, SDS Group Bhd, and Farm Fresh, are also expanding and innovating in the consumer sector. 7-Eleven Malaysia Holdings Bhd is incorporating cafe concepts into its convenience stores, while QL Resources Bhd is introducing the Family Mart Mini Smart Kiosk vending machines. Focus Point’s expansion strategy includes the opening of Komugi street shops, and SDS Group Bhd is expanding through partnerships with major retailers. Farm Fresh is also entering the direct-to-consumer market with its Jomcha milk tea outlets.
The consumer sector earnings for the third quarter of 2022 were uneven, with the benefits of reopening being somewhat offset by inflationary pressures and rising interest rates. However, the low base effect from inefficient business operations in FY21 was the main factor contributing to the growth of the sector.
As the sector continues to evolve, it’s likely that we’ll see more innovation and expansion, with companies adapting to changing consumer needs and preferences.
Looking Ahead
As we look to the future, it’s clear that the consumer sector in Malaysia will continue to play an important role in the country’s economy. With the potential for further growth and innovation, it’s likely that we’ll see new opportunities emerge for businesses and individuals alike. As the sector continues to evolve, it will be important to watch how companies adapt to changing consumer needs and preferences, and how they navigate the challenges ahead.
One thing is certain – the consumer sector will remain a key driver of economic growth in Malaysia, and its impact will be felt by individuals and communities across the country. As we move forward, it will be interesting to see how the sector develops, and what new opportunities and challenges emerge.
As we wait to see how the consumer sector in Malaysia will continue to grow and evolve, there are several key developments to watch. Will companies be able to adapt to changing consumer needs and preferences, and how will they navigate the challenges ahead? How will the growth of the F&B sector impact the overall economy, and what new opportunities will emerge for businesses and individuals?
These are just a few of the questions that will be answered in the coming months and years, and it will be interesting to see how the consumer sector in Malaysia continues to develop and grow.
