Sixty-seven people lost their lives when a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ-700, operating as an American Eagle regional jet, collided with a U.S. Army Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport on January 29. The wreckage now rests in the Potomac River.

No survivors were found. The airport immediately shut down, causing widespread disruption to the air travel network serving the nation’s capital. The collision occurred over the Potomac River, a location that highlights the intense pressure on the airspace around Reagan National Airport.

The airport sits directly across from downtown Washington, D.C., and operates within one of the most restricted and complex airspaces globally. Every approach to its runways requires a low-altitude, high-stakes navigation through no-fly zones, military training routes, and helicopter traffic from nearby military bases.

The Black Hawk was conducting a routine training flight. The CRJ-700 was on a scheduled passenger route. The force of the impact was severe, though no further details about the collision itself are currently available.

The investigation, led by the National Transportation Safety Board, is expected to take months or longer. PSA Airlines, the operator of the regional jet, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the American Airlines Group.

The company employs over 5,000 people and operates more than 800 flights daily to nearly 100 destinations. It exclusively flies the Bombardier CRJ-700, a model central to American Eagle service. The airline had recently announced plans to relocate its headquarters from Dayton, Ohio, to Charlotte, North Carolina, basing operations at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. That move was intended to mark a new chapter.

Now, the focus shifts to survival, potential litigation, and scrutiny of whether the airline’s training and scheduling procedures played a role in the disaster. The U.S. Army owns the Black Hawk helicopter.

Details of its training operation, including its route, altitude, and communications with air traffic control, have not been released. The presence of military aircraft in the same approach path as commercial jets has long been a known tension point at Reagan National. The airport’s proximity to the Pentagon and other military installations creates constant overlap between commercial and military aviation.
