Deutsche Bank has fallen to the sixth‑largest provider of transaction services for German corporate clients, according to Dealogic figures. The slide follows a two‑decade effort to compete with U.S. investment banks, a strategy that the bank officially abandoned on 22 August 2019.
Chief Executive Christian Sewing set out a new course aimed at the German “Mittelstand” – the nation’s mid‑size enterprises that underpin its economy. The shift intends to move the lender away from Wall Street‑centric investment banking and back toward corporate banking for domestic firms. Winning back the Mittelstand will prove difficult.
A recent overture to online retailer Zalando, which offered to hold the company’s cash free of charge, was turned down. Zalando – a €5 billion business built in just 11 years – chose to keep its funds spread across several banks, even at the cost of paying fees.
The rejection highlights that price alone will not sway German corporates; they are looking for reliability, service quality and a solid reputation. Deutsche Bank’s image has suffered from a series of scandals over the past years, a factor that now hinders its efforts to regain trust at home. Sewing has acknowledged that the bank’s domestic footprint has contracted, a problem when the new strategy depends on deeper relationships with German executives. Competition for the Mittelstand is intense.
Both foreign banks and domestic rivals have been courting these firms while Deutsche Bank pursued American deals. To attract clients, the lender must not only promise a new focus but also demonstrate the capability to deliver, something that will require structural changes.
The bank’s organization was built around investment banking, meaning staff, systems and priorities must be re‑aligned for corporate banking. Potential mergers or expansions are being explored, but any such moves will be closely examined given the pressure on the balance sheet and the ongoing decline in market share. For German mid‑size companies, the key question is whether Deutsche Bank can provide something their current banks do not.
Zalando’s decision makes clear that lower fees are insufficient; firms prioritize consistent service and a trustworthy track record. Sewing has pledged to make Deutsche Bank the leading partner for German corporate executives.
While the ambition is clear, the path forward will require tangible results, one client at a time, amid entrenched competition and a shrinking presence in the domestic market.
