Employees in India’s formal sector can now confirm that the 8.25 percent interest for the 2025-26 financial year has been credited to their provident fund accounts, with the updated balance viewable through a central online portal. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has completed the process of applying the annual return, and members can access the updated record by logging into the EPFO Member Passbook Portal at passbook.epfindia.gov.in. Access requires a 12-digit Universal Account Number and a password.

The EPFO designed the UAN as a single, permanent identifier for each worker, linking all provident fund accounts held across different employers into one consolidated digital record.

How Members Can Review Their Updated Passbook

The verification process is straightforward. After logging in with their UAN and password, members select the appropriate Member ID from the portal interface.

The system then displays a detailed statement that lists contributions made during the financial year, any withdrawals that were processed, and the amount of interest credited. The EPFO had previously announced the 8.25 percent interest rate for the 2025-26 fiscal year, and the crediting operation is now finished. The passbook portal serves as the sole official channel for confirming that the interest has been applied correctly. At this stage, the record confirms the 8.25 percent interest has been deposited, and the verification window remains open for all members to check their accounts.

The Universal Account Number and Its Purpose

The UAN system was introduced to solve a longstanding challenge for India’s formal-sector workforce. Before its implementation, workers who changed jobs were required to open new provident fund accounts with each employer. This practice created a fragmented system in which individuals had to keep track of multiple account numbers, each carrying its own balance and accumulating interest separately.

Managing those separate records was cumbersome and often led to lost or inactive accounts. The 12-digit UAN eliminates that fragmentation.

When a member changes jobs, the new employer links the new provident fund account to the same UAN. All contributions from successive employers flow into the single digital record, and interest is calculated on the combined balance. For the current fiscal year, members who maintained consistent contributions will see the full 8.25 percent annual return applied to their accumulated corpus. The government introduced the Universal Account Number in late 2014 specifically to fix the problem of duplicate records and to make the system portable.

This portability ensures that retirement savings remain intact regardless of how many times a person changes employers.

EPFO’s Role in India’s Social Security Framework

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation is a social security agency operating under India’s Ministry of Labour and Employment. It manages retirement plans for Indian workers, regulates provident funds, and provides insurance coverage for death and disability. The organization also administers a basic pension scheme. The EPFO functions under the Code on Social Security, which replaced an earlier act dating from the early 1950s.

Registration is mandatory for all firms that employ a minimum number of workers. For employees earning below a set wage ceiling, participation in the provident fund is compulsory.

Workers earning above that ceiling may choose to join the scheme once, but they cannot leave it after opting in. By consolidating contributions and interest into a single digital record, the UAN system and the online passbook portal work together to simplify how workers track their retirement savings. These mechanisms help ensure long-term financial stability for the formal-sector workforce, making it easier for individuals to monitor their accumulating corpus and verify that interest has been credited as announced.
