Malaysia\u2019s total trade up 8.6% to RM236bil in December 2022

For the people of Malaysia, the latest trade figures are a welcome boost, with the country’s total trade increasing by 8.6% year-on-year to RM236.0 billion in December 2022. This growth has a direct impact on the lives of individuals and communities, as it can lead to more job opportunities, increased economic activity, and a higher standard of living.

The increase in trade is a result of a 6.0% rise in exports to RM131.9 billion and a 12.0% increase in imports to RM104.1 billion, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM). The Chief Statistician, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, noted that Malaysia’s total trade in 2022 reached a new milestone of RM2.8 trillion.

This achievement is a testament to the country’s strong economic performance and its ability to navigate the complexities of global trade. The export performance by states showed that exports in December 2022 increased by RM7.5 billion or 6.0% compared to the same month of the previous year. Several states, including Johor, Sarawak, Selangor, and Labuan, recorded significant increases in exports, with Johor leading the way with an increase of RM4.3 billion.

State-by-State Performance

A closer look at the state-by-state data reveals that many states experienced an increase in exports. For example, Negeri Sembilan saw an increase of RM264.1 million, while Perak and Kedah recorded increases of RM230.1 million and RM184.0 million, respectively. Other states, such as Melaka, Kelantan, Kuala Lumpur, and Perlis, also saw an increase in exports, albeit at a smaller scale.

However, not all states performed well, with Sabah’s exports falling by RM1.7 billion and Pahang’s by RM563.3 million. Terengganu and Penang also recorded declines in exports, with decreases of RM531.0 million and RM93.3 million, respectively.

In terms of imports, the majority of states, including Johor, Selangor, and Melaka, had higher imports in December 2022 than in the same month the year before. The increase in imports was RM11.2 billion, or 12.0%, which is a significant boost to the country’s economic activity. Selangor was the biggest contributor to imports, with a share of 27.2%, followed by Penang, Johor, and Kuala Lumpur.

The top five largest exporting states were Penang, Johor, Selangor, Sarawak, and Kuala Lumpur, with Penang leading the way with a share of 30.8%.

Looking Ahead

As Malaysia continues to navigate the complexities of global trade, it is essential to monitor the country’s trade performance closely. The latest figures are a positive indication of the country’s economic resilience, but there are still challenges to be addressed. The decline in exports in some states, such as Sabah and Pahang, is a concern that needs to be addressed through targeted policies and initiatives.

Furthermore, the increase in imports is a welcome boost to economic activity, but it also highlights the need for Malaysia to continue to diversify its economy and reduce its reliance on imports. As we look to the future, it will be essential to watch how Malaysia’s trade performance evolves in the coming months.

The country’s ability to adapt to changing global trade patterns and to capitalize on new opportunities will be crucial in determining its long-term economic success. With the right policies and initiatives in place, Malaysia can continue to build on its strong economic performance and create a brighter future for its people. The next set of trade figures will be closely watched, as they will provide valuable insights into the country’s ongoing economic performance and its ability to navigate the complexities of global trade.
