Ninepoint Partners LP has been watching the same market everyone else has. But the Toronto-based firm’s 2026 Mid-Year Market Outlook, published June 17, does not pretend the view is clear. What matters most, reading between the lines of the report, is a single word: pivot.
Not a pivot in policy or inflation — a pivot in how investors even think about opportunity. The report’s portfolio managers spent the first half of 2026 watching a consensus shatter.
James Fox, Co-CEO and Managing Partner, said the year began with everybody agreeing inflation was drifting back toward target, rates were coming down, and the economy was on steady footing. That agreement lasted until a conflict in the Middle East changed the picture almost overnight. That is the close-read fact.
Not the conflict itself — the speed at which it erased consensus. Advisors and investors, Fox said, are now re-assessing where the real opportunities are and what risks exist.
The report offers perspectives on fixed income, energy, metals and mining, gold equities, silver equities, infrastructure, and digital assets. But the underlying message across all of those sectors is the same: the old assumptions are dead. John Wilson, Co-CEO and Managing Partner, put it bluntly.
What the first half demonstrated, he said, is how quickly the market backdrop can change — especially given the current geopolitical climate. That is why active management matters, he argued. The line is not a throwaway.
It is the report’s central argument against passive strategies in a world where the ground shifts without warning. Despite the global uncertainty, equity markets have remained resilient.
The report credits AI and data centre investment, demand for metals and critical minerals, and sovereignty over critical infrastructure. Those are the forces still holding the market up. But the report’s question for the second half is not whether those forces will hold.
It is how investors position portfolios for a much less predictable environment. That is a different question from the one investors were asking in January.
In January, the question was how much further rates would fall and how fast. Now the question is about positioning for unpredictability itself. The report does not pretend to have a tidy answer.
It offers perspectives from portfolio managers, not predictions from a crystal ball. The release of the 2026 Mid-Year Market Outlook is itself a reminder. Active management and careful portfolio positioning matter when the consensus breaks.
The report’s portfolio managers are betting that being ready to move matters more than being right about where the economy will land. Investors will be watching closely to see how the predictions and insights outlined in the report play out.
But the report’s real value may be simpler than its forecasts. It names the thing that changed — not just the conflict, but the certainty that preceded it. That certainty is gone.
The report is an attempt to figure out what comes next without pretending to know the answer.
