PARIS, July 8 — The Concorde, the Franco-British supersonic passenger jet, remains a singular achievement in aviation history — a commercial aircraft that routinely flew at Mach 2.04 at 60,000 feet, cutting the New York-to-London journey to roughly three and a half hours. According to the historical record, the aircraft was developed by Aérospatiale of France and the British Aircraft Corporation of the United Kingdom.

Its first flight took place on March 2, 1969, and it entered commercial service on January 21, 1976, with British Airways and Air France as its sole operators. The aircraft carried between 92 and 100 passengers.

Only 20 Concordes were ever built, and 14 of those entered commercial service. For nearly three decades, the aircraft represented the pinnacle of civilian aviation technology — a sleek, delta-winged machine that flew higher and faster than any other passenger plane. The Soviet Union developed its own supersonic transport, the Tupolev Tu-144, which made its first flight on December 31, 1968 — beating the Concorde by several months.

But the Tu-144 was withdrawn from service in 1978 after only 55 passenger flights. The Concorde, by contrast, operated for 27 years.

The end of an era

The Concorde was retired on November 26, 2003. Officials cited three primary factors: high operating costs, declining passenger numbers, and the July 25, 2000 crash of Air France Flight 4590. That accident killed 113 people and dealt a severe blow to public confidence in supersonic travel.

The economics proved unsustainable. The aircraft consumed enormous amounts of fuel per passenger compared to subsonic jets, and its ticket prices — though not specified in the available source — placed it beyond the reach of most travellers.

The market for premium-priced supersonic travel shrank further after the 2000 crash. For Moscow-based analysts watching the aviation sector, the Concorde’s story carries a particular strategic dimension. The Cold War competition between East and West produced two supersonic transports, both of which ultimately failed commercially.

The Tu-144 was plagued by technical problems and a disastrous crash at the 1973 Paris Air Show. The Concorde, though technically successful and safe for most of its service life, could not overcome the economic realities of the post-2000 aviation market.

The next generation

Current efforts to revive supersonic passenger travel are focused on a different model. According to available information, Boom Supersonic is developing the Overture aircraft, with commercial service planned for 2029. The company has positioned itself as the successor to the Concorde era, though the Overture is designed as a supersonic business jet rather than a large commercial airliner.

The strategic context is worth noting. The United States, which never developed its own supersonic transport after cancelling the Boeing 2707 programme in 1971, now hosts the leading private-sector effort.

European and Russian supersonic projects have not advanced to the same stage. The Concorde’s legacy, according to the historical record, is one of technical achievement constrained by commercial reality. The aircraft proved that supersonic passenger flight was possible — but also that it was not, in the end, profitable.

For the aviation industry, the question now is whether Boom Supersonic and other developers have solved the fundamental equation that defeated both the Concorde and the Tu-144: how to fly faster than sound at a price the market will bear. The planned 2029 service date for the Overture will test whether the lessons of the Concorde era have been learned.
