Overstated Claim: Amazon and SpaceX Valued at $2T, Not $4.5T

A headline figure claiming that the combined market capitalization of Amazon and SpaceX reaches $4.5 trillion has circulated in financial news, but publicly available records paint a far more modest picture. According to the most recent data, Amazon’s market capitalization was approximately $1.8 trillion as of early 2025.

SpaceX, a private company, was valued at roughly $180 billion in its most recent funding round, which closed in December 2023. Adding those two numbers yields approximately $2 trillion in total value—less than half the $4.5 trillion that some headlines have reported. Analysts suggest the inflated figure may reflect a broader technology sector index or simply be a computational error.

The discrepancy underscores the challenge of tracking valuations when one company is publicly traded and the other remains closely held.

Revenue and Cash Positions: Two Very Different Scales

Amazon reported total revenue of $574 billion in 2023, supported by $73 billion in cash and equivalents that same year. By contrast, SpaceX generated an estimated $8.7 billion in revenue in 2023, split primarily between launch services and subscriptions to its Starlink satellite internet network.

The company also raised $2.5 billion in equity in 2023. Both firms maintain significant cash reserves to support their respective satellite projects, but their revenue streams operate at fundamentally different magnitudes. Amazon’s revenue alone is more than 65 times larger than SpaceX’s estimated top line.

The $4.5 trillion claim, if taken at face value, would imply a combined valuation greater than the entire market capitalization of many developed stock exchanges—a reality not supported by the numbers.

Two Companies, Two Valuation Realities

A company’s market capitalization is the total value of its outstanding common shares, a figure that for a public firm like Amazon is derived from stock market trading. Amazon’s $1.8 trillion market cap reflects its public market performance. For SpaceX, which is not publicly traded, valuation is estimated through funding rounds; its $180 billion valuation comes from a December 2023 equity raise.

While both companies operate in overlapping orbits—each pursuing satellite-based internet services and holding large cash positions—their scales of revenue and valuation are vastly different. SpaceX was founded in 2002 by Elon Musk and has made significant advances in rocket propulsion and reusable launch vehicles.

The company’s early years were marked by challenges and failures, but it achieved success with the launch of the Falcon 1 in 2008. Since then, SpaceX has become a leading player in the industry, with numerous contracts with NASA and other government agencies. Its reusable launch vehicles have significantly reduced the cost of access to space.

SpaceX operates several divisions, including space exploration, connectivity, and artificial intelligence. The company’s valuation and financial performance are important because they reflect its ability to invest in new technologies and projects.

Its pursuits in satellite-based internet services and other areas have significant implications for the tech industry and beyond. The data ultimately shows two American firms at fundamentally different stages of scale, with combined worth of roughly $2 trillion—not the $4.5 trillion that some financial headlines have suggested.
