From a 350-Square-Foot Room to a 13 Lakh Crore Empire
MUMBAI, November 2, 2026 — Reliance Retail Executive Director Isha Ambani invoked her grandfather’s philosophy of “growth is life” during the listing ceremony for Jio Platforms, framing the debut not as a conclusion but as a continuing pledge to investors.
The ceremony marked the culmination of a corporate arc that began in 1958 when Dhirubhai Ambani returned to India from Aden to start a textile business. What began in a 350-square-foot office in Masjid Bunder, Mumbai, with a single telephone and three chairs, has evolved into a conglomerate whose digital arm is now valued at over Rs 13 lakh crore. Isha Ambani, who also serves as Non-Executive Director at Reliance Industries (RIL), addressed the crowd at the National Stock Exchange (NSE), emphasizing that the event was a promise rather than a finish line.
“Today isn’t a finish line. It’s a promise,” she stated, referencing the legacy of Dhirubhai Ambani, who founded Reliance Industries and passed away in July 2002. His vision for a telecom business that would cost less than a postcard was realized through his son, Mukesh Ambani, who spearheaded the creation of Jio. The listing ceremony served as a public reaffirmation of the family’s commitment to the growth principles established by the patriarch more than six decades ago.
The Financial Weight of the Debut
The market response to the listing was immediate and positive. Jio Platforms shares opened at Rs 1,358 apiece on the NSE and BSE, representing a premium of 21.36% over the IPO price of Rs 1,119. This debut gave investors an initial gain of Rs 239 per share. The valuation placed the company at over Rs 13 lakh crore, cementing its status as a major player in the global telecommunications and digital services sector.
Financial data presented during the period highlights the scale of the operation. Isha Ambani noted that Jio had generated approximately $15.5 billion in revenue and around $8 billion in earnings this year. She observed that few companies worldwide had achieved comparable financial performance in just 10 years. This rapid scaling is a direct result of the strategy outlined by Mukesh Ambani, who is credited with identifying the potential for a mass-market digital platform in India.
Reliance Industries, the parent company, reported a 40.6% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 25,548 crore in the second quarter of FY27. Revenue from operations reached a record Rs 3.38 lakh crore, a 28% rise compared with the previous year. The improvement was driven by stronger refining margins and growth in the digital services business, although the retail segment showed relatively weaker performance. Jio Platforms itself reported a 13.7% year-on-year increase in net profit to Rs 8,389 crore for the September 2026 quarter, its first quarterly results announcement since the stock market debut.
A Legacy Divided and Reunited
The current success of Jio is inextricably linked to the corporate history of the Ambani family, specifically the 2005 split of the undivided Reliance Industries. Mother Kokilaben Ambani, with the assistance of banker KV Kamath, brokered an agreement that divided the empire between her two sons. Mukesh Ambani retained refining, petrochemicals, and oil and gas businesses, while his younger brother Anil Ambani took telecommunications, infrastructure, and financial services under the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG).
The divergence in their fortunes has been stark. While Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Platforms listed at a valuation exceeding Rs 13 lakh crore, his brother’s former telecom venture, Reliance Communications (RCom), faced a different trajectory. RCom, which was listed in March 2006, peaked at Rs 844 per share in 2008 with a valuation of nearly Rs 1.5 lakh crore. By October 2026, the Department of Telecommunications had taken back the spectrum allotted to RCom, which is undergoing corporate insolvency amid investigations by the Enforcement Directorate over financial fraud. The company’s value has decimated to approximately Rs 230 crore, representing a 99.99% drop from its peak.
This contrast underscores the volatility of the Indian corporate landscape and the critical importance of strategic execution. Dhirubhai Ambani’s original idea for a low-cost telecom service was executed by his son Mukesh, who built Jio into a dominant force. The 2005 non-compete agreement that barred each brother from the other’s businesses ultimately led to two vastly different outcomes, with Jio emerging as a global-scale digital entity and RCom facing insolvency.
Family Dynamics and Public Celebration
The IPO listing was accompanied by a gala dinner hosted at the Ambani family’s Mumbai residence, Antilia. The event highlighted the family’s continued unity in the face of the company’s expansion. Isha Ambani wore an ivory chikankari anarkali, while her mother, Nita Ambani, donned a green silk saree with gold-and-emerald jewels. Nita Ambani, who is also the founder of the Dhirubhai Ambani International School, gave a speech at the dinner, remembering her late father-in-law.
“Today has been a very emotional day, and I feel the presence of my father-in-law, Shri Dhirubhai Ambani. I miss him dearly,” Nita Ambani said. She recalled that many shareholders had held onto Reliance shares to fund their children’s education and marriages, a testament to the long-term trust investors placed in the company. Isha Ambani also acknowledged the support of her family, including her brothers Akash Ambani and Anant Ambani, as well as her sister-in-law Shloka Mehta and Radhika Merchant. She praised Mukesh Ambani for his vision and willingness to pursue ideas others considered impossible, stating that his leadership had opened new possibilities for hundreds of millions of Indians.
Jio Platforms Chairman Akash Ambani, who outlined plans focusing on enterprise services, international markets, and emerging technologies such as 6G and artificial intelligence, was part of the team that guided the company through its pre-listing phase. Isha Ambani credited Manoj Modi for his guidance, noting that she and Akash had begun their careers under his mentorship. The family’s public display of unity and gratitude for the company’s success reinforces the narrative that the Ambani brand is built on a foundation of long-term commitment and strategic vision.
Market Outlook and Future Trajectory
Following the Q2 results, brokerages have issued varied outlooks on the stocks of Reliance Industries and Jio Platforms. Reliance Industries settled 0.2% lower at Rs 1,164.90, while Jio Platforms settled over 1% higher at Rs 1,431.30. Five brokerages have given positive recommendations for Reliance Industries, with share price targets ranging from Rs 1,490 to Rs 1,703. Nuvama has set the highest target at Rs 1,703, indicating a potential upside of 46.2% from the current market price. Other targets include Rs 1,550 from Emkay, Rs 1,537 from Equirus Securities, Rs 1,520 from MOSL, and Rs 1,490 from PL Capital.
For Jio Platforms, Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOSL) has maintained a BUY rating with a share price target of Rs 1,515. The market’s focus remains on the company’s ability to sustain its growth trajectory in a highly competitive digital landscape. The strong financial performance, with record revenues and significant profit increases, suggests that the company is well-positioned to meet investor expectations. The listing of Jio Platforms is a significant milestone for the Indian stock market, reflecting the growing confidence in the country’s digital infrastructure and its potential for global expansion.
The journey from Dhirubhai Ambani’s initial textile imports to the $15.5 billion revenue of Jio illustrates a remarkable corporate evolution. The family’s ability to adapt and innovate, guided by the foundational principles of growth and customer value, has resulted in one of the most successful corporate stories in India. As the company moves forward, the focus remains on leveraging its technological strengths to serve a broader global audience, while honoring the legacy that started in a small office in Mumbai over half a century ago.
