Malaysia Palm Oil Stockpiles Fall 6.56% to 2.11M Tonnes

Harvested palm fruit bunches pile up at a Malaysian plantation during seasonal rains, slowing processing.

Malaysia, March 12, 2023 — cybernewschronicle.com — Seasonal patterns have done what they always do in Malaysia’s palm oil sector: pulled production down and sent stockpiles sliding. The February data from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board, released March 10, shows inventories fell 6.56% to 2.11 million tonnes. That is the lowest since November 2022.

The headline number matters, but the forces underneath tell the real story. Crude palm oil output dropped 9.35% month-on-month to 1.25 million tonnes.

That is not a shock. The first quarter is the lull. Monsoon rains linger.

Harvesting slows. Trees yield less.

MPOB director-general Dr. Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir called it “consistent with the seasonal lull.” He expects recovery as weather improves toward the second quarter. Palm kernel production followed the same path, falling 7.10% to 316,196 tonnes. The inventory drawdown was not uniform.

Crude palm oil stocks fell 7.69% to 1.16 million tonnes. Processed palm oil stocks dropped 5.15% to 959,451 tonnes. That combined decline pushed total inventories below 2.2 million tonnes for the first time in three months.

Exports slipped 1.99% to 1.11 million tonnes. Demand from India and China softened.

Both countries are sitting on high inventories of their own. That is a headwind. But the export picture is not uniformly weak.

Oleo-chemicals and biodiesel shipments posted gains. Those product categories are smaller in volume, but their strength hints at a shifting demand structure — more processed goods, less raw commodity.

The production side is the real lever here. Malaysia is the world’s second-largest palm oil producer. When its output drops, global vegetable oil markets feel it.

The 9.35% monthly decline in CPO production is steep by any measure. February is always a low month, but this was lower than January’s 1.38 million tonnes. The question is whether the seasonal trough is deeper than normal or simply following the usual pattern.

The MPOB’s own language suggests the latter. Still, stockpiles at 2.11 million tonnes are not critically tight.

They are down from January’s 2.26 million tonnes, but they remain above levels seen in the second half of 2022. The market is not in crisis. It is in a routine seasonal contraction.

What matters next is the recovery. If weather normalizes and output climbs through March and April, inventories could stabilize.

If the monsoon drags on or if labor shortages — a persistent issue in Malaysia’s plantation sector — slow the rebound, stocks could tighten further. The MPOB expects gradual recovery. That is the baseline forecast.

But baselines shift. The export softness to India and China bears watching. Those two buyers absorb a huge share of Malaysia’s palm oil exports.

When they pull back, the market feels it. High inventories in those countries mean they are not in a hurry to buy.

That could keep export volumes subdued through the first half of 2023, even if production recovers. On the other hand, biodiesel and oleo-chemical exports are growing. That diversifies Malaysia’s customer base.

It is a slow shift, not a sudden pivot. But over time, it reduces reliance on a handful of bulk buyers.

The February data gives a clear read: seasonal forces dominate. Production is down. Stocks are down.

Exports are mixed. The second quarter will tell whether this is just the usual winter dip or something more persistent. For now, the numbers are what they are — a routine contraction in a cyclical industry.
