Heineken NV has announced a significant expansion of its brewery in Ponta Grossa, Brazil, committing 865 million reais (US$183.14 million) to the project. The announcement was made on March 12, 2020, and construction is scheduled to begin within the year.

The Dutch brewer intends to increase the facility’s production capacity by 75%. The investment marks an acceleration of the company’s existing strategic plan. Heineken has moved forward its planned investments by one year, prioritizing Brazil despite a recent economic slowdown in the country.

Mauricio Giamellaro, Chief Executive Officer of Heineken Brazil, stated that the company is bringing forward all investments from its strategic plan by a year, emphasizing that Brazil is a key market for the company. Heineken has clarified that it will not delay its investment in Brazil, viewing the market as more important for sales than the United States and Europe.

The company sees long-term growth potential in the region. This expansion follows Heineken’s acquisition of Kirin’s Brazilian operations for US$1.2 billion in 2017, which doubled the company’s output in the country. According to media reports, Heineken now holds 22% of the Brazilian beer market.

This has significantly reduced the lead of its main competitor, Anheuser-Busch InBev. Heineken, the world’s second-largest brewer, produces 250 international, regional, local, and specialty beers and ciders and employs approximately 73,000 people globally.

The investment comes amid intensifying competition in the Brazilian beer market. Analysts have noted that Heineken’s plan follows a similar move by AB InBev, which announced a target of 2 billion reais for a new beer plant and can-producing unit in northern Brazil. AB InBev has long dominated the market with its popular brand Skol. Heineken’s brand portfolio includes Heineken, Amstel, and Bavaria.

Both companies are investing heavily, betting on long-term consumption growth in Brazil, where beer remains a staple in social life. Brazil’s economy has experienced slower growth in recent years, but beer consumption has remained resilient.

Heineken’s decision to invest now signals confidence in the country’s potential as a growth engine. The Ponta Grossa expansion, located in the strategically important Parana state, will allow Heineken to serve both southern and southeastern markets more effectively. The company is positioning itself to challenge AB InBev more directly, competing not only on price but also on quality and variety through its global supply chain and brand portfolio.

The investment is part of a broader trend of global brewers focusing on emerging markets. Brazil is one of the largest beer markets in the world, and Heineken’s move demonstrates a commitment to the country for the long term.

The expansion is expected to create jobs and boost local economic activity in the Ponta Grossa region. Heineken’s aggressive strategy involves acting now to capture growth, rather than waiting for economic conditions to improve. The company’s leadership is confident that Brazil will reward their investment in the dynamic and competitive beer market.
