Warner Bros. Discovery to be sold to Paramount Skydance in 2026

NEW YORK, July 21 — The figure that matters for Warner Bros. Discovery today is the sum it will fetch from Paramount Skydance — a price the companies have not disclosed, but one that caps a four-year saga of debt reduction, division shuffling, and regulatory clearance. By the numbers: The company was formed on April 8, 2022, through the spin-off of WarnerMedia by AT&T and its merger with Discovery, Inc., structured as a Reverse Morris Trust.

On April 23, 2026, Warner Bros. Discovery agreed to be sold to Paramount Skydance.

The U.S. Department of Justice approved the deal on June 12, 2026. The transaction is now pending final closing conditions. Investors will note that the sale price remains undisclosed, but the DOJ sign-off removed a major obstacle.

The bottom line: Warner Bros. Discovery operates through two divisions.

Streaming & Studios houses the flagship Warner Bros. studio — founded April 4, 1923, by brothers Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack Warner — along with HBO, DC Entertainment, and the company’s streaming services. Global Linear Networks groups the advertising-supported cable channels inherited from Discovery (e.g., Discovery Channel), Scripps Networks Interactive (e.g., HGTV), and Turner Broadcasting System (e.g., Cartoon Network, Boomerang, CNN, TBS, TNT). International operations are managed by Warner Bros.

Discovery International. Warner Bros. is one of the “Big Five” American film studios and a member of the Motion Picture Association. Its corporate lineage runs deep.

Kinney National Company reincorporated as Warner Communications in 1972. Warner Communications merged with Time Inc. in 1990 to become Time Warner.

Time Warner acquired Turner Broadcasting System in 1996. Then came the merger with AOL in 2001, reversed in 2003. Time Warner spun off its cable division in 2009, AOL later that year, and Time Inc. in 2013.

AT&T acquired Time Warner in 2018, rebranding it as WarnerMedia. That same year, Discovery Communications acquired Scripps Networks Interactive and renamed itself Discovery, Inc. The 2022 merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery combined those two media empires.

The company’s debt situation and post-merger integration have been key topics on Wall Street. Before the sale agreement, analysts tracked the pace of debt reduction and the success of combining legacy linear networks with streaming ambitions. The Paramount Skydance deal, if completed, will hand off those challenges to new ownership.

What to watch next: The closing timeline for the Paramount Skydance acquisition, any further regulatory reviews in international markets, and how the combined entity will structure the Warner Bros. studio and Turner cable assets under new management.
