Citi Links Hormuz Reopening to Fed Rate Cuts and $5,000 Gold Target

Citi has put a $4,500-an-ounce target on gold for the next 0-3 months and a $5,000 target for 6-12 months. The longer forecast depends on two events: the Strait of Hormuz reopening and the Yemen/Saudi conflict easing by year-end.

The bank’s argument runs through oil and interest rates rather than the usual demand for a haven during a crisis. Reuters reported that Max Layton, Citi’s global head of commodities research, believes much cheaper crude could move the Federal Reserve from raising rates to cutting them.

That shift would encourage investment in bullion and could restart a worldwide momentum rally, with existing structural forces providing additional support.

Why Hormuz matters

The strait has been central to gold’s behaviour during the conflict. Disruption to oil flows kept energy costs elevated, feeding inflation and reinforcing expectations of tighter Fed policy.

Higher rates and real yields make holding gold less attractive because the metal pays no income. That helps explain why it has struggled even as geopolitical danger increased.

Citi expects a reopening to reverse that sequence. Cheaper oil would reduce inflation pressure, giving the Fed greater freedom to lower rates and pull yields down. Those conditions have generally favoured gold.

A different haven trade

The call effectively treats de-escalation as bullish. Investors watching the thesis would focus on Brent crude and shipping through Hormuz, rather than assuming that another military escalation must lift bullion.

Bullion’s record came in late January, at nearly $5,600 for an ounce. The US-Iran war started at February’s end, and prices have stayed well beneath that high. Citi’s 6-12 month objective would claw back much of the decline without taking gold into record territory.

The forecast is therefore conditional, not a straight-line prediction. A sustained reopening of the waterway and a durable reduction in hostilities would be the clearest signs that the bank’s assumed chain of events is taking hold.

Until then, energy-driven inflation and expectations of further Fed tightening remain the immediate risks for the metal.
