TalentCorp study warns 697,000 Malaysian jobs at risk from AI and automation

For roughly 697,000 Malaysian workers, the career they trained for may not exist in a decade. That is the blunt finding buried inside TalentCorp’s new impact study on AI, digitalisation, and the green economy. The agency, which reports to the Human Resources Ministry, says 3.2 million workers across 22 sectors will feel the shake-up.

Nearly 700,000 of them will feel it hard. Those numbers land on a region already uneasy about automation.

Parents watching their children tap away at smartphones now have a clearer picture of what is coming. Comfort with technology, the report argues, is table stakes. The real edge belongs to kids who can think — who can tear apart an argument, spot a bad source, and decide when to trust the machine and when to override it.

The World Economic Forum estimates 39 percent of core job skills will shift by 2030. That is not a distant prediction.

That is six years out. For Generation Alpha, the first cohort born fully into the digital age, multiple career changes are not a possibility — they are a probability. TalentCorp CEO Biruntha Mooruthi put it plainly: unlike previous generations who could expect a stable ladder, Gen Alpha will face constant transitions as industries and roles evolve.

And yet the report is not a eulogy for human workers. It identifies 120 emerging roles gaining importance across the economy. That is 120 new job titles that barely existed a decade ago.

The catch: those roles will demand skills AI cannot easily replicate. Communication.

Teamwork. Critical thinking. Creativity.

Emotional intelligence. The list reads like a rejection of the idea that coding alone will save anyone.

For families, this shifts the conversation about education. The traditional emphasis on memorisation and exam scores looks increasingly obsolete. What matters now is teaching a child to ask the right questions, to sit with uncertainty, to argue a point and then change their mind when the evidence flips.

Those are harder things to test. They are also harder to outsource to a chatbot. The study does not name specific sectors most at risk, but the 22 affected industries span the economy.

Workers in routine, rule-based jobs face the most exposure. Those in roles requiring judgment and human interaction have more breathing room.

The gap between those two groups is where the policy challenge lives. TalentCorp’s mandate is talent retention. The agency is essentially warning Malaysia that the workforce of 2030 needs to look very different from the workforce of 2024.

Continuous learning is not a buzzword here. It is a survival mechanism.

The CEO said it plainly: continuous learning will become increasingly important for Gen Alpha. No caveats. No softening.

What happens next depends on whether schools, employers, and families take the warning seriously. The report provides the data. The World Economic Forum provides the timeline.

The parents provide the urgency. The 697,000 workers most likely to be displaced are not abstract figures.

They are people with mortgages, children in school, and skills that may not match the market five years from now. That is the real story behind the study. It is not about AI taking jobs.

It is about the kind of thinking no machine has yet mastered — and whether the next generation can learn it fast enough.
