New Zealand Super Fund Names Permanent Head of Data and Analytics

The New Zealand Super Fund has formally appointed Anastasia Moskvina as its new head of data and analytics, a position she has occupied on an interim basis since March of this year. The move locks in continuity for the fund’s efforts to harness data science, artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics to sharpen investment decisions, signaling that the organization intends to deepen its reliance on quantitative approaches under a leader already familiar with its ambitions.

From Acting Role to Permanent Appointment

Moskvina first joined the fund’s data and analytics team in October 2022, and prior to that spent more than four years as a data scientist at Bank of New Zealand. She holds a Master of Information Technology, Mathematics and Economics from Irkutsk State University and earned a PhD in Computer Science from Auckland University of Technology. Co-chief investment officer Will Goodwin noted that the fund is intent on building data, analytics and AI capability to support better investment outcomes, and that Moskvina was already playing a “leading role” in shaping the organization’s thinking on AI and advanced analytics.

Her work has spanned AI governance, practical use cases, and how to build scalable capability. “Her appointment reflects the combination of technical ability and leadership qualities she brings to the team,” Goodwin said.

The NZ Super Fund manages money on behalf of future New Zealanders, and better investment outcomes powered by improved analytics and AI matter directly to the size of the nest egg waiting for them down the line. The fund was established in 2001 to invest contributions set aside by the New Zealand government for future retirees. Its purpose is to grow those contributions over time, reducing the long-term burden on taxpayers when today’s workforce reaches retirement.

Operating at arm’s length from government, the fund has an independent board and a mandate to maximize returns within acceptable risk levels.

A Quiet Push Toward Data-Driven Investing

For observers who have watched the fund’s gradual turn toward data-driven investing, Moskvina’s formal appointment signals continuity. She has been at the center of that drive since joining the fund, and her permanent role locks in a leader who is already well versed in the organization’s strategic direction. The fund’s investment approach has shifted over the years from traditional public equities and bonds to more sophisticated strategies, including global infrastructure, private equity, and increasingly, data-driven decision-making.

This evolution reflects a broader trend among large institutional investors. Many now rely on quantitative models, alternative data sources, and machine learning to identify market patterns and manage risk.

The shift has been gradual, driven by advances in computing power, the growth of digital information, and the need to outperform in an increasingly competitive investment landscape. The role of head of data and analytics, now held by Moskvina, was created to formalize a function that had grown organically within the NZ Super Fund. Leaders have emphasized building internal capability rather than outsourcing critical analysis, signaling a long-term commitment to self-sufficiency and innovation in investment strategy.

What comes next will be worth watching: how the fund builds on the governance frameworks and use cases Moskvina has helped develop, and whether the capability she is scaling can deliver the edge the fund is after. For New Zealand taxpayers and future retirees, the stakes are straightforward.

The fund’s performance directly affects the size of the nest egg it can pass on. A stronger return today means more security for tomorrow’s pensioners. Moskvina’s appointment underscores how seriously the fund takes this responsibility and how seriously it now treats data as a core asset in fulfilling its mission.
